Why Is Fentanyl So Dangerous?

As a former congressman who represented the single largest Southern border district, and a former overseas CIA officer, I’ve been dealing with threats to Americans’ security and well-being for my entire adult life. We are faced today with an alarming rise in fentanyl abuse that is devastating the lives of over 107,000 American families a year because of drug overdose deaths. This is more than two times the number of deaths from gun violence. 66% of these deaths involve synthetic opioids – primarily fentanyl. Fentanyl isn’t just a problem in border states – it’s a problem from California to Maine.
